Some tips on how to re-thread your axles: You will probably need a file to file down really damaged axles before using this tool. You can buy a file from any hardware store.

If the end of the axle has been mushroomed very badly and you just try to unscrew the nut with force, you will probably destroy the nut and still not be able to remove it.
What you want to do instead is actually screw the nut DOWN as much as possible. This will expose the end of the axle for you to file the mushroomed part away. Basically you need the very end of the axle to be smaller than the threaded part so just imagine you are sharpening a pencil. After its been filed down properly, you should be able to unscrew the nut without too much difficulty.

Once the nut is out, check the end of the axle again and "sharpen" it with a file if needed, before using the re-threader. Make sure you screw the re-threader down straight and not at an angle, and go slowly.... like screw it down half a turn, then back out a bit to clear the chips, then screw it down another half turn... repeat until its all good. Clear out all the little metal shavings if they are getting in the way. It may also help to apply some oil.
